Respiratory System -

Untitled

Ribs - External Structure that protects internal structures like lungs

Intercostal Muscle - Muscles between ribs → Control movement based on inhalation and exhalation

Diaphragm - Sheet of connective tissue and muscle at bottom of the thorax allowing for change in volume during in/exhalation

Trachea - Windpipe connecting mouth and nose to lung - Rings of cartilage support airways and keep them open due to pressure changes

Larynx - Voice box → Produces sound when air passes through

Bronchi - Tubes branching from trachea, one bronchus for each lung

Bronchioles - Smaller tubes splitting from bronchus connected to alveoli

Alveoli - Air sacs where gas exchange takes place

Gas Exchange Features -

  1. Large SA
  2. Thin [Short diffusion distance]
  3. Good blood supply
  4. Good ventilation
  5. Permeable
  6. Moist
