Gene Structure -

Inheritance - Transmission of genetic information from generation to generation

Chromosomes [Located in nuclei] = Thread-like structures of DNA carrying genetic information as genes

Gene = Short length of DNA on chromosome — Contain codes for specific proteins

Alleles = Different versions of a particular gene — give all organisms their characteristics

Sex Inheritance -

Sex - Determined by entire chromosome pair

XX = Female

XY = Male [Since only father can pass on a Y chromosome, he is responsible for determining sex of child]

DNA cannot travel out of the nucleus, hence mRNA transcribes stands of it onto itself

  1. DNA unwinds and unzips
  2. mRNA forms using DNA as template, copying gene into mRNA
  3. mRNA moves out of nucleus into cytoplasm
